What gets altered most often
Almost everything that comes off a rail or arrives in a suitcase from India needs some adjustment. These are the jobs that come through the door every week.
- Taking in or letting out the bust, waist and side seams
- Shortening kameez, kurta, lehenga and dress lengths
- Sleeve length and armhole adjustments
- Saree blouse resizing and reshaping
- Salwar, churidar, palazzo and trouser hems
- Zip, hook, fastening and lining repairs
Outfits brought from India
A very common situation: the outfit was bought or gifted in India, stitched to a rough size or to measurements taken a year ago, and it does not fit. This is normal and usually very fixable.
Bring the garment and turn it inside out before you come — what is possible depends almost entirely on how much seam allowance the original tailor left. Five minutes of looking will tell you more than any phone estimate.
How to get a better result
Three things make an alteration go well. Bring the shoes you will wear with the outfit, because length is set from the shoe. Wear or bring the underlayers you will actually have on. And tell us the event date up front — not after the work is quoted.
Western clothing too
Alterations are not limited to Indian garments. Trousers, dresses, jackets and shirts are all handled, which is useful when you are having a mixed wardrobe adjusted before an event season.
